Slate roofing is made by hand from natural slate quarried in Spain. Roofs built from this material have a longer lifespan than currently commercially available roofing tiles. Slate tiles are installed on the battens with either nails or hooks, which makes it relatively easy.
Why choose a slate roof?
A properly installed slate roof can last 80–100 years and even more – there are roofs in Europe that have lasted for over a century. The stone does not fade, rust or need painting. Unlike non-natural materials, the appearance and properties of slate do not change over time: long maintenance life, water resistance and fire resistance (A1) are a given from nature.
Slate is a material with incomparable properties that can be adapted to any project. Natural stone gives every roof a unique, timeless and unchanging look – it is not without reason that slate has been used as a roofing material for churches, manors and castles.
Slate roof material
We use natural stone hand-mined in the quarries of the world’s leading slate producer CUPA PIZARRAS. The production of natural slate is an artisanal process, during which the material is not chemically or thermally processed – only the raw material is mined and cut to size. Therefore, the ecological footprint of a slate roof is very low compared to any other type of roofing.
For the Estonian climate, we recommend thicker types of slate tiles, similar to those installed in Scandinavia. Thicker tiles are more resistant to moisture, freeze-thaw cycles and mechanical stress.

Slate tiles are attached to the battens with nails or hooks, with sufficient overlap according to the roof slope – the flatter the roof, the greater the overlap. A ventilated structure, a correct underlay and sheet metal work ensure that the slate roof can withstand storm winds, snow loads and temperature fluctuations. If a single tile is damaged, it can be replaced without opening the roof.
If desired, we can install a roof with a built-in solar heating system – the combination of natural stone and solar panels is suitable for both new construction and renovated buildings.
Although a slate roof is more expensive as an initial investment than a tin or stone roof, its 80–100-year lifespan makes it one of the most cost-effective options in terms of life cycle costs. A tin roof requires 1–2 replacements and regular maintenance painting during the same period, while slate does not. Yes. Natural slate is frost-resistant, waterproof and has good resistance to UV radiation and temperature fluctuations. Thicker Scandinavian-type tiles are specially selected for this purpose.
Depending on the thickness of the board, 25–35 kg/m². Most roof structures can withstand this load without problems, but if necessary, we will assess the load capacity before installation.
Generally from 22 degrees. For smaller slopes, a compacted base layer and a larger overlay are used – we assess suitability on a site-by-site basis.
